Who's Who in the CWVC

Deborah Taylor
Deb Taylor lives in Fort Wayne, IN with her husband, John. Deb and John have 4 children: Nathan, Carol, and identical twins Emily and Beth. They also have two Vizslas, Priden Joy Carembe Alexander JH CGC (Alex) and CH Shawnric's Devil in Disguise JH CGC (True).

Deb has had Vizslas for 3 years. She says, "I like the way they want to be with me". Deb is currently in obedience class with True and is hoping to take an advanced class with Alex. She comments "Meeting Joy Sonsalla at a dog show in January 1995 was the beginning. Little did we know how much we would love the Vizsla breed. We got our little bundle of red, called Alex, in July 1995 from Joy. She has been so helpful with our questions and guiding us in the training. We have also met so many people and it has been great!"

Deb also enjoys antiquing and collecting different kinds of dishes.

Marilyn Brown
Marilyn joined our club via the Internet and lives in Florida with husband, Jim. They have two Vizslas, CH Vancross' Set D Woods on Fire JH CGC (Scorch) and Semper Fi Woods Afire Two Kliks Out (Favor). After 3-1/2 years of Vizsla ownership, Marilyn says she likes the temperament. "They adapt to it all!!!"

In addition to the Vizslas, they have a 6-year-old Doberman, and a 2-1/2-year-old English Pointer and four cats.

Marilyn and Jim enjoy "everything" with their Vizslas, including showing, hunting, obedience, and the everyday activities Vizslas bring. Other interests include outdoor life, swimming, camping, and shopping.

Marilyn comments, "German Shorthaired Pointers seem to rule the roost as far as hunting goes in Florida. We hope to prove that a fallacy. We want that to change."

A Message from the President

by Joy Sonsalla

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope this finds all of our members and their significant four-legged companions ready to tackle the new year with renewed enthusiasm.

As part of my New Year's resolutions, I have vowed to spend more time doing things I enjoy with companions I enjoy being with. What this means to me is that I spend less time at work and more time in the company of my family, friends, and dogs!!! Being active in the CWVC allows me to spend lots of time with my friends and dogs (and hopefully I can encourage more of my family and friends to join the fun!)

I have also vowed to emphasize the good in things. In this light, I would like to take the opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to all of you who have volunteered enthusiastically to make last year's club efforts a great success. Without all of you volunteering your time and yourself to our club, we would not continue to grow in membership, commitments, and functions. If I began to thank each of you individually, I'm sure I would overlook someone. The last thing I want to do is offend someone who has so graciously offered of themselves to our club. So I will just say a simple "THANK YOU" to ALL of you who have actively contributed to the club's efforts of this past year.

The club belongs to all of us. Not only do we need members to help in activities, we need your ideas. We cannot know what you want from the club unless you let us know. If you haven't talked to other club members in a while, consider coming to a quarterly meeting or event or give one of the officers or board members a call (or E-Mail). We're anxious to get members together. We have events that we need your help putting on. We have quarterly meetings that need your ideas. In return, our members can help you get started in a new dog-related activity or help with some aspect of dog training or provide advice. Our members have a variety of talents, knowledge, and experiences. Join us to make new friends. Join us to indulge in "dog-talk". Consider volunteering for the upcoming events by contacting the event chairperson or secretary. Don't be shy, come out and enjoy the fun!

I look forward to an exciting 1999!

PS. Don't forget to check out the CWVC Website. Penny's doing a FANTASTIC job!.

Field of Champions Invitational Dog Show

by Becky Smith

Three members of the CWVC had the privilege of participating in the 1998 Field of Champions Invitational Dog Show held in St. Cloud, MN on Friday, December 4, 1998. This was the first show of its kind anywhere in the United States. The Granite City Kennel Club did a great job putting this one-of-a-kind event together. The BOB and BOS prizes for Vizslas (engraved pewter tankards) were donated by Mark and Becky Smith.

In order to participate in the Field of Champions, dogs must have completed their conformation championships, plus have a title that demonstrates they can do what they were bred to do. Herding dogs had to have herding titles, sporting dogs had to have titles associated with hunting. In the case of Vizslas, any hunt test title or field trial title, along with the show championship, would qualify.

To make the event more special, judges and stewards were in formal dresswear. Tuxedos and evening gowns adorned the rings. Competitors could also dress formally if they chose to.

Members of the CWVC that participated were Becky Smith with Seger, and Frank and Jan Hollar with Zorrie and Aaron. Best of Breed for the Vizslas was awarded to Kathy Rust's bitch, Eve. A person can't feel bad taking a back seat to Eve, as she was also the Best of Breed dog at the VCA National Events this year! Eve went on to get a Group I at this event. (It might be interesting to note for those out there that are dog show enthusiasts, the standard poodle competed in the Sporting Group for this event. Poodles were, after all, originally bred for hunting. Their parent club offers a hunt test program where they can demonstrate their hunting abilities.) Best in Show was awarded to the Alaskan Malamute.

Whether a participant or a spectator, this was an event worth coming out for. The pride in these fine dogs, whatever the breed, that can perform in the various arena and the show ring was obvious to everyone.

Vizsla Vanity

by Penny Honetor

As I walked through parking lots at agility and conformation shows in addition to the 1998 VCA Nationals, following are some interesting Vizsla and canine vanity plates and bumper stickers I’ve seen:

VIZSLA
VIZSLAS (states of WI, WA, CO, OK, OH)
VIZSLAZ
VZSLA
1 VIZSLA
V1ZSLAS (that’a a one, someone beat us to the “I”!)
VIZSLAK (the proper Hungarian way to pluralize Vizsla)
OTCH V
NEW DAWN (I wonder who this is?)
CH VIZ MH (ditto!)
BIS VIZ (ditto ditto!)
K9 LIMO
4 DA DOGS

“My Vizsla is better-behaved than your Honor Student”
“It‘s hard to be humble when you own a Vizsla”

…isn’t that the truth!.
